Buffaloes heading to the Telus Cup

BURNABY – The Calgary Buffaloes are heading to the Telus Cup, after a 1-0 victory on Saturday night to sweep the Pacific Regional championship over the Vancouver North East Chiefs.

Kael Svenson stopped all 30 shots that he faced to record the shutout, and Talen Lewis scored the only goal at 1:53 of the third period, converting a pass from Cooper Williams.

But the story of the game was the special teams as the Alberta Elite Hockey League U18AAA champions successfully killed off 10 powerplays during the game.  Svenson was named the player of the game for the Buffaloes. Teammate Jackson Schneider was named the series MVP.

With the series sweep, the Buffaloes represent the Pacific Region at the 2024 Telus Cup in Membertou, Nova Scotia, April 22-28.

Calgary opened the Pacifics with a 3-2 win on Friday night. Williams scored what proved to be the winning goal, from Schneider, with 9:28 remaining in the second period, as the Buffaloes completed a comeback from a 2-1 deficit. Christian Stephanson and Brayden Gourlay each had a goal and assist, while Caleb Matthews added two helpers. Svenson was outstanding in the Buffaloes net, facing 27 shots to earn the victory. Williams was named the game MVP.
